April 27, 2026: a historic date for Sicilian genealogy
The Portale Antenati has published online the riveli di beni e anime: the ancient Sicilian censuses from the 1500s to the 1800s. A huge development for genealogists and historians.
Until yesterday, these records could be consulted almost exclusively in Palermo; today they can be studied from home. For anyone researching Sicilian genealogy, this publication truly changes everything.
Inside the riveli we find:
families
houses and lands
livestock and agricultural production
debts and wealth
professions and social conditions
Not just names and dates, but real snapshots of the lives of our Sicilian ancestors.
On June 7th I will be in Modica for a conference dedicated to genealogy, where I will also give a talk focused on this extraordinary documentary heritage and the new opportunities it opens for Sicilian genealogical research.
