Agnatic research

Faber est suae quisque fortunae – Appio Claudio Cieco

WHAT IS

The agnatic research is the “standard” type, as well as the most requested.
The modus operandi is to ascend from generation to generation focusing only on direct ancestors; in other words, starting from an individual “known” I’ll seek for his father, grandfather, great grandfather and so on (all with their wives): so it goes to the root of the interesting family branch – adjective “patrilineal” comes from this -, whether paternal or maternal.

The picture shows the direct branch of Caesarion, son of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar: there are no uncles, cousins, granduncles etc.

This type of search is usually the fastest, because the number of individuals to look for is well defined (one pair for each generation).

Being purely “vertical” allows to focus efforts toward achieving more remote period to which they can push, which usually corresponds to the sixteenth century (1501-1600)

HOW DOES IT WORK

Like any family history research sources vary with the times.

Until the beginning of the 1800 these consist of the Civil State, the military registers, the diocesan archives. Further back remain the diocesan archives and church records, when available and accessible. Finally, there are Catasti Onciari (called “Reveals of goods and souls” in Sicily).

You can decide the time at which to stop, or the maximum budget to invest.
